Aircel Chennai Open Dec 30,2013 - Jan 05,2014



This tournament has been India's largest tennis event since 1996.

 It was originally held in Delhi as the McDowell Open before moving to the SDAT Tennis Stadium in Chennai in 1997.

Originally known as the McDowell Open, and then as the Gold Flake Open when moved to Chennai, and subsequently as the Tata Open and the Chennai Open, the event now has a new tile sponsor - Aircel, and is called Aircel Chennai Open

Support for the event also comes from the Tamil Nadu Government along with a consortium consisting of Indian Bank, United India Insurance, Indian Overseas Bank and Murugappa Group under the Platinum category.

 This ATP event has attracted some of the best names in tennis circuit, including Boris Becker, Rafael Nadal and Carlos Moya.

The tournament is played on hard court (PlayPave) and comprises two events - the Men's Singles and the Men's Doubles and carries a total prize money of $450,000

The Men's Singles event has 28 players, which includes 3 wild cards and 4 qualifiers and

 the Men's Doubles event features 16 teams

At the draw held here on Saturday Dec 28,2013, the top four seeds — Stanislas Wawrinka, Mikhail Youzhny, Fabio Fognini and Benoit Paire — all received byes, as has been the norm in recent years.
Of the top eight, Wawrinka, Fognini, Vasek Pospisil and last year’s singles finalist Roberto Bautista Agut are slotted into the top half of the draw while Youzhny, Paire, Granollers and Edouard Roger-Vasselin occupy the bottom half. 

Defending champion Janko Tipsarevic(Serbia) has pulled out of the Aircel Chennai Open, due to start on Monday, after failing to recover sufficiently from a ruptured heel tendon
Janko Tipsarevic’s place will now be taken by one from the alternates’ list that includes Michael Russell (No. 92), Oleksandr Nedovyesov (93), Donald Young (96), Evgeny Donskoy (98) and Sergiy Stakhovsky (99) among others


World No. 9 Janko Tipsarevic won a hard-fought three-setter against first-time ATP World Tour finalist Roberto Bautista Agut(Spain) to capture his first Aircel Chennai Open title on his sixth visit to this hard-court tennis tournament. 
Janko Tipsarevic defeated Roberto Bautista Agut(Spain) 3-6, 6-1, 6-3 in one hour and 50 minutes to lift his fourth ATP World Tour trophy and become the first Serbian to win a title here in the 18th edition of this tournament.

  • Edouard Roger-Vasselin (France) beats Marcel Granollers (Spain) 6-2, 4-6, 6-3
  • Stanislas Wawrinka (Swiss) beats Vasek Pospisil 6-4, 5-5 (retd.)

Men's Singles Finals
  • Stanislas Wawrinka (Swiss) beats Edouard Roger-Vasselin (France)7-5,6-2

Marin Draganja & Mate Pavic (Croatia) beats Sriram India's Balaji & R. Ramkumar 6-3, 6-3
