Andaman Boat Tragedy Sunday Jan 26,2014


An overcrowded boat with over 50 passengers, mostly tourists, capsized in the Bay of Bengal near Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar on Jan 26,2014 Sunday afternoon, killing at least 21 people.

Mohammed Rafique, the duty officer in Port Blair, said that the boat capsized about 300 feet from shore and investigation so far suggests the boat hit a rock.

The boat, 'Aqua Marine', was reportedly carrying mainly tourists, including a large group of around 32 people from Kanchipuram in Tamil Nadu.

 It sank on its way from Ross Island to the North Bay at around 4 pm on Sunday Jan 26,2014

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announces ex-gratia for Andaman boat tragedy victims

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today Monday Jan 27,2014 sanctioned an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees to the families of those killed in a boat tragedy at Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

Manmohan Singh condoled the loss of lives in the boat tragedy and announced the relief from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund
