2014 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 Brazil Vs Chile Saturday June 28,2014

Brazil Vs Chile at Belo Horizonte

Brazil secured a dramatic penalty shootout win against Chile to reach the QF

Having never lost to La Roja on home soil and having beaten them on all three of their previous World Cup meetings, Brazil arrived with history on their side.
Chile earned a 2-2 draw at the same venue last year but that was one of only two encounters in which they avoided defeat since last beating Brazil 14 years ago

Match facts

Fred had the most shots in the first half, but failed to get one on target. Brazil have now lost just one of their last 16 World Cup games when scoring first.
Five of Chile's six goals at the World Cup have come before half-time. Fernandinho committed more fouls (6) than he made passes (4) in the opposition half.
If a penalty is being taken to avoid elimination, the success rate is only 44%. The last eight World Cup shootouts have been won by the team going first.

Brazilian Goalkeeper Julio Cesar was the hero, making two crucial spot-kick saves - saved from Mauricio Pinilla and Alexis Sanchez as Brazil went on to win a tense shootout 3-2.

David Luiz and Marcelo had converted their efforts for Brazil, but with Willian and Hulk missing theirs, it fell to the hosts' star striker Neymar to step up under intense pressure and calmly slot home what proved the winning kick

Earlier David Luiz had put the hosts in front, only for Alexis Sanchez to equalise.

Hulk then had a strike disallowed for handball by English referee Howard Webb - fairly, but much to the anger of the home fans.

Pinilla also hit the crossbar for Chile in the final minute of extra time

Brazil win 3-2 on penalties after the scores were level at 1-1

  • Both Teams went into extra-time after ending 1-1
  • Chile's Gonzalo Jara hit the post with his spot-kick to send Brazil through

Chile's forward Mauricio Pinilla Tattoos the goal miss
Indelible: Chilean striker Mauricio Pinilla gets the now-infamous moment of his World Cup miss tattooed on his back (bottom left) along with the words 'One centimeter from Glory', as well as the script 'Blessed For Life' across his forehead
Tattoos are painful at the best of times, but this one must have seriously hurt.

Chilean striker Mauricio Pinilla recently got his 119th-minute World Cup miss against Brazil etched into his back.
Next to the image of his shot slamming off the crossbar, it reads: 'One centimeter from glory.'
