President's rule imposed in Maharashtra as Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan resigns Sunday Sep 28,2014

President's Rule was imposed in Maharashtra on Sunday after Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan resigned following the breakup of the 15-year-old Congress-NCP alliance in the state.

President Pranab Mukherjee signed the proclamation for imposing central rule in Maharashtra a day after the Union Cabinet recommended putting the state under President’s Rule.

The brief Cabinet meeting on Saturday Sep 27,2014 was chaired by Home Minister Rajnath Singh in the absence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is away in the US.

With the NCP withdrawing support to the government in Maharashtra, Chavan had resigned on Friday. His resignation was accepted by Governor Vidyasagar Rao.
Since Assembly polls are scheduled for next month, the Governor, in his report to the Centre, had recommended the imposition of President’s Rule.
