Telangana makes Telugu compulsory from first standard to Intermediate from next academic year

Telugu would be implemented as a compulsory subject from first standard to Intermediate, including in the CBSE and ICSE schools, from the next academic year.
Deputy Chief Minister K. Srihari, who also holds Education portfolio, reviewed the steps to be taken before the commencement of the 2018-19 academic year in tune with the decision already taken by Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao. He directed the officials to complete necessary arrangements for the implementation of the decision well in advance.
He suggested the officials to implement Telugu as a subject without causing much hardship to students at any levels and at the same time making it an interesting and scoring subject.

Meeting

The meeting, which was also attended by the sub-committee set up on it, discussed the way the local language was being implemented in Tamil Nadu and Punjab as a compulsory subject.
Officials explained that there were about 1,370 schools across Telangana without Telugu as a subject and there would not be any problem in introducing it till Intermediate level from the next academic year. Further, the officials explained to the sub-committee that textbooks are being prepared in a manner not to cause any hardship to sixth standard students, even if they did not learn it till fifth standard. The textbooks for seventh standard are also being designed in such a manner that it could be grasped easily, even if the students are new to it till then.
The sub-committee informed the Deputy Chief Minister that they had discussed the issue with CBSE and ICSE authorities and the boards had not expressed any objection to the State Government decision. There were guidelines both in CBSE and ICSE to make the local language a compulsory subject but it was not being implemented at many places.

The Deputy Chief Minister stated that the sub-committee would also function as advisory panel in the implementation of Telugu as a compulsory subject. Committees would also be set up at State and District level to supervise implementation of Telugu as compulsory subject. Special Chief Secretary Ranjeev R. Acharya, Director of School Education G.
