 Team News

In a big relief for Sri Lanka, team's star all-rounder Angelo Mathews has recovered from cramps and is available for selection for the series-deciding third ODI against India in Vizag on Sunday Dec 17,2017.

Angelo Matthews, who suffered from cramps during his unbeaten century knock in the second ODI at Mohali on December 13,2017  bowled and batted as the Sri Lanka cricket team hit the ground running by taking part in a training session on Friday.

Rohit Sharma, the skipper for this series, has played three innings here, and has scored 172 runs. He boasts of a strike-rate of 94.50 and and an average of 86. The right-hand opening batsman has two fifties to his name, with 90 n.o. as his highest score.

MS Dhoni is on the cusp of a special milestone ahead of the third and deciding ODI against Sri Lanka at the ACA-VDCA stadium here. The former Indian cricket team skipper needs 102 runs to become only the second wicket-keeper batsman in ODI history after Kumar Sangakkara to go past 10,000 runs.

Achieving the milestone at this venue will be apt, for it was at this stadium, against Pakistan 12 years ago that the seeds for Dhoni’s India success were sown.

In 2004, Dhoni was included in the Indian cricket team on the back of strong domestic performances. However, his debut did not go according to expectation as he was run out for a golden duck against Bangladesh at Chittagong in 2004. After scores of 12, 7*, 3 in his next three ODIs, it looked like Dhoni’s promising career would never take off.

However, during the second ODI against Pakistan in Visakhapatnam, things changed. Coming to bat at No.3 after the fall of Sachin Tendulkar, Dhoni proceeded to change the course of the match with a swashbuckling knock full of dazzling strokes. His 148 off 123 included 15 fours and four sixes and such was the nature of his knock that even Virender Sehwag’s 74 off 40 balls was overshadowed.

India won the match by 58 runs but the knock had given Indian cricket a new superstar and Visakhapatnam an innings to remember. Recently in February 2016, Dhoni had tweeted about the city from where his rise to super stardom had begun. “Vizag, one of the cities, that I would love to live in, nice and beautiful landscape with beach and home to my first big innings,” the former skipper had tweeted.

In 2005, Dhoni had come to Visakhapatnam on the back of a poor start to his international career but his knock demonstrated that he belonged in the highest level. With captaincy, he matured and became the finisher who took India over the line in numerous last-over finishes. He also became the only captain to win all three major ICC tournaments.

Match Result - India won by 8 wickets

Series Result - India won the 3-Match ODI Series 2-1

Player of the Series -  Shikhar Dhawan(India)0, 68 and 100*

Indian spinners strangulated the Sri Lankan batting before Shikhar Dhawan and Shreyas Iyer starred with the bat as India sealed a convincing 8 wicket win over Sri Lanka and sealed the series 2-1 in Vishakapatnam on Sunday.

Set a modest 216 to win, India lost captain and double centurion in the last match Rohit Sharma early for 7

Shreyas Iyer joined Shikhar Dhawan in the middle and the two stepped on the gas to ensure Sri Lanka has no chance of scripting any comeback.

Iyer outpaced Dhawan and scored a fine 65, though he would be disappointed as he had a great chance to remain unbeaten or even score a maiden ton. Perera accounted for him as he mishit one straight to Lakmal at mid on.

However, the experienced Shikhar Dhawan made the most of the opportunity and completed his 12th ODI ton in dominating style.

He wasn't troubled even once and remained unbeaten on 100, scoring 13 boundaries and 1 maximum. Dinesh Karthik too remained unbeaten on 26.

Earlier, winning the toss and electing to field first, it didn't go according to plan for the hosts as Sri Lankan openers came out all guns blazing with Upul Tharanga doing the maximum damage.

He smashed 5 consecutive boundaries of Hardik Pandya's over as Sri Lanka looked set for a big total. Sadeera Samarawickrama provided the supporting role and it seemed that the Islanders might well post a score above 300 - which was required on the pitch.

India decided to bring in Kuldeep Yadav in place of ill Washington Sundar and Rohit decided to introduce the wrist spinner in the 11th over.

Kuldeep and Chahal then hunted in pairs and Sri Lanka had no answers to the Indian spin duo.

First to depart was Samarawickrama, who tried to go after Chahal but ended up finding Dhawan, who completed a simple catch.

MS Dhoni's quick work behind the stumps meant that Tharanga - who looked set for a ton - had to make his way back to the pavilion for 95.

After that, the Indian spinners completely dominated as Sri Lanka collapsed from 160/2 to 215 all-out.

Some ordinary shots along with some fine bowling led to Sri Lanka's downfall. The spinners shared six wickets between them as Kuldeep ended with figures of 3/42 and Chahal with 3/46.

Dickwella ended up giving catching practice to Shreyas Iyer at first slip. Mathews got an absolute peacher from Chahal to which he had no answer and had to make his way back to the dressing room for 17.

Pandya (2/49), Bumrah (1/39) and Bhuvneshwar (1/35) also chipped in with the wickets.

With this 2-1 Series Victory over Sri Lanka
,India marched to their 8th successive bilateral ODI series victory by beating Sri Lanka 2-1

India's 8th Successive  Bilateral Series Victory

This winning streak began with a 3-0 victory against Zimbabwe last year and they have beaten New Zealand (twice), England, West Indies, Sri Lanka (twice) and Australia since then.

Overall in ODI history, only one team has had a longer streak of bilateral series wins.

West Indies had won 14 consecutive bilateral series (of two or more games) between1980 and 1988.

India's previous longest bilateral winning streak was of six series between November 2007 and June 2009.
