10 Films On Journalism

Steven Spielberg’s political thriller The Post, which released in India last Friday Jan 12,2018, tells the true story of journalists from The Washington Post who published the Pentagon papers and exposed details about the US government’s involvement in the Vietnam War. Here’s a look at 10 other films on journalism.

Spotlight (2015): Tom McCarthy’s drama followed The Boston Globe’s investigation of child sex abuse in Boston area by Roman Catholic priests. The film, starring Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton and Rachel McAdams, won the Academy Award for best film and made $88 million at the box office.

Truth (2015): The political docudrama directed by James Vanderbilt is based on real-life CBS News journalist Mary Mapes and the Killian documents controversy relating to US President George W. Bush’s service in the Air National Guard in 1972-73. Starring Cate Blanchett and Robert Redford, it earned $2 million in domestic box office collections.

No One Killed Jessica (2011): Director Rajkumar Gupta’s biographical thriller is based on the Jessica Lal murder case and tracks the media reportage that led to the final sentencing of the killer. The Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan-starrer made Rs27 crore in box office collections.

Rann (2010): The Ram Gopal Varma film tackles the murky politics of the news industry and features Amitabh Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh in lead roles. It netted about Rs10 crore in box office collections.

Good Night, and Good Luck (2005): The George Clooney-directed historical drama portrays the conflict between veteran broadcast journalist Edward Murrow and US senator Joseph McCarthy. Starring David Strathaim, Patricia Clarkson and Clooney himself, it made $54 million at the box office.

Page 3 (2005): Madhur Bhandarkar’s cult film depicts the Page 3 culture and media life of Mumbai. The film won three National Awards, besides Rs11 crore in box office collections.

Shattered Glass (2003): The crime drama directed by Billy Ray narrates the rise of a real-life reporter whose journalistic fraud was later exposed. Starring Hayden Christensen, Peter Sarsgaard and Chloë Sevigny, it earned $2 million in box office collections.

Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani (2000): Aziz Mirza’s comedy drama chronicles the tale of two rival newsrooms fighting for eyeballs. The film, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Juhi Chawla, made Rs9 crore at the box office.

New Delhi Times (1986): Shashi Kapoor plays a newspaper editor who exposes the politics-media corruption nexus in the Romesh Sharma-directed film. The National Award-winning movie ran into much trouble with distributors refusing to screen it.

All the President’s Men (1976): The political thriller revolved around the Watergate scandal, which brought down the presidency of Richard M. Nixon. Directed by Alan J. Pakula, it made $70 million at the box office
