Second T20 Match Preview

A ruthless India has only complacency to guard against while a deflated South Africa would be fighting another battle of survival when the two sides clash in the series-deciding second Twenty20 International, here on Wednesday Feb 21,2018

India won the first T20I at Johannesburg by 28 runs and a victory in the 2nd T20 will see them wrap up another series win on this tour.

A highly competitive 1-2 loss in the Tests, followed by a comprehensive 5-1 ODI triumph has made for quite a roller-coaster tour so far and the Indians would be aiming for a happy end to the long sojourn with a T20 victory.

A prospective 3-0 series’ win would also help India climb up the ICC T20I Rankings and take up second spot behind Pakistan. However, if Australia beat New Zealand in the T20 tri-series’ final (on Wednesday as well), India would stay on in their current third position.

JP Duminy 64*(40 Balls 4x4 and 6x3)and Heinrich Klaasen starred with the bat as South Africa defeated India by 6 wickets to level the three match series 1-1 in Centurion on Wednesday.

Rain threat continued to loom large but South Africa managed to chase down 189 with 4 balls to spare, despite losing both openers – Smuts and Hendricks – early.

Smuts departed for 2 while Hendricks departed for 26, trying to up the ante as South Africa kept one eye on the D/L score.

Klaasen joined captain Duminy in the middle and the two never looked trouble. They were aided by the conditions as constant drizzle meant bowlers had to struggle with the grip.

Klaasen took the aggressor's role in the partnership, targeting the leg side and also bringing out the reverse sweep to target Chahal. The leg-spinner ended up conceding 64 runs in his 4 overs and was wicket-less in what was a disappointing outing for him.

At one stage it seemed India would get back into the game after Klaasen and David Miller were dismissed in quick succession, but Duminy extinguished any hopes of an Indian comeback as he took on Unadkat, smashing two sixes to finish off the game.

Earlier, Manish Pandey and MS Dhoni helped India reach 188, which looked like an above par total given the conditions.

India lost Rohit early for a duck. Raina then joined Dhawan as two put together a 44-run stand. Then, India lost
Dhawan and Kohli in quick succession, with the Indian skipper having a rare failure with the bat.

But then Raina and Pandey steadied things for India, putting together 46-runs for the fourth wicket partnership.

Raina was dismissed for 31, and that meant Dhoni joined Pandey in the middle. Dhoni hasn’t been having the best of times with the bat but the former skipper proved why he still has so much to offer as he scored his second T20I half-century off just 27 balls.

He bought ot his A-game, including short arm jabs that went for sixes and some hard running between the wickets which challenged the fielders.

Pandey too scored a fine 79 off just 48 balls, with Morris, Paterson and Shamsi going for big runs. Dhoni again proved to be the master finisher as he picked up 18 runs of the final over to help India finish strongly

On Wednesday, with India struggling at 90 for four, Dhoni joined Manish Pandey in the middle. This was always going to be a crucial match for him. His lackluster show – without sixes and fours, in the latter overs in ODIs had been covered up by good bowling by the Indian spinners and inept batting by the South Africans. This was the first time in the series that the Proteas had got rid of India’s top order cheaply.

Dhoni delivered. He first played himself in as Manish Pandey went about scoring the runs. Pandey in a way took the pressure off Dhoni.

However, once he got his feet in, the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman began to play his shots and got particularly severe on Dane Paterson in the last over. While there had been little doubts over his wicketkeeping skills, there were some creeping about his batting.

For the first 24 runs, he used 18 deliveries helped by a six which he hit dancing down the wicket. Apart from that six, he was alert to taking singles and doubles and allowing Pandey to discover ways of scoring quickly.

But in the last two overs, he opened up, taking 11 runs off Chris Morris, with a six and a four and then ripping Paterson apart by taking 17 runs.

Statistics of MS Dhoni’s innings

*  MS Dhoni’s 27 ball-fifty is the joint-fastest (withShikhar Dhawan) by any Indian batsman against South Africa in T20Is.
*  Dhoni’s 27-ball fifty is the second fastest half century he has scored in all formats. His best remains his 26-ball fifty against England back in the year 2011.
*  Dhoni scored 28 runs in the final two overs of the innings at Centurion. It is the second highest scored by an Indian batsman. Yuvraj Singh leads the pack, who scored 44 runs in 10 balls against England in 2007.
*  MS Dhoni, who smashed 3 sixes in the match and has now scored a total of 44 sixes in T20Is. It is the third highest by a wicketkeeper, only followed by Mohammad Shahzad (68) and Brendon Mc Cullum(58)
*  The 98* run partnership between Dhoni and Pandey was the fourth highest fifth-wicket partnership in T20Is, only followed by Shoaib Malik and Misbah ul Haq for Pakistan (119* against AUS in 2007), Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni (102* against AUS in 2013) and Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah (102 against New Zealand in 2008)

Rohit Sharma Registers Unwanted Record

Sent into bat first, India lost Rohit Sharma for a first-ball duck in the second over of the match by Junior Dala.

After being dismissed for a duck, Rohit now has the most number of ducks by an Indian in T20I, 4. He is followed by former India pacer Ashish Nehra and Yusuf Pathan, who are both tied on 3

Apart from having an unwanted record to his name, the 30-year-old batsman also joined the list of the Indian openers who have scored golden ducks in T20Is. Other batsman to feature in the list are Murali Vijay (vs South Africa in 2010), Ajinkya Rahane (vs Pakistan in 2016) and KL Rahul (vs Zimbabwe in 2016).
